Yoga for Valentine's Day (or any day)

Yoga for Valentine's Day (or any day)

Valentine’s Day is all about relationships with others. But what about our relationship to ourselves? Many experts think it’s the foundation of all other connections.

How well do we know ourselves? How clear are we about our intentions, motivations and deal breakers? Clarity in these aspects allows us to choose, cultivate and deepen relationships (romantic and otherwise) with people who are aligned with our values and interests.

Yoga can help. It’s about using the physical body to create mental space so that you can make conscious choices rather than just fall into habits. Here are some suggestions for poses to help you to start tuning in to your inner voice:

Forward Bends

Forward bends are great because they are literally about turning inward, away from the distractions of the world. Some suggestions are Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend - pictured), Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) or Upavistha Konasana (Wide Angle Seated Forward Bend).

Tree Pose

Balancing poses are also great for tuning into yourself. You have to be in the moment in order to stay upright, so your usual mental chatter will just drop away. Vrksasana (Tree Pose) is one of my favorites. It seems very simple when you start, but the 'better' you get at it, the more you can refine it.

These practices have helped me and I hope they help you. If you spend even a few minutes a day attempting these poses you'll begin to cultivate an introspective, open state which is the basis for getting to know yourself better.

As always, the MAÄT 1.0 Legging is here to support you in your practice.
