We all know that if we want to be in great shape and age well, then we need to exercise our bodies. What’s less talked about is that in order for our brains to age optimally, we need to exercise them too.
Luckily, something as enjoyable as listening to music is one of the best ways to stimulate our brains. It activates a wide variety of networks at the same time: the auditory cortex, the motor system, numerous memory regions and areas involved in emotions. When brain pathways are used, they’re strengthened; when they aren’t used, they’re weakened. Basically, if we don’t use them, we’ll lose them.
Not only will listening to music impact our brain’s health for years to come, but there’s also evidence of more immediate positive benefits, such as:
-
Reduced anxiety
-
Decreased pain
-
Lowered blood pressure
-
Improved sleep quality
-
Elevated mood
-
Increased mental alertness
-
Strengthened memory
Actively listening to music seems to give our brains the biggest boost, but having music in the background also shows benefits. Sound meditations are a great opportunity to relax and practice active listening, while running or working out with music is a good way to passively exercise the brain as you exercise your body. Of course both can be done just sitting at home. Next time you’re tempted to scroll, put on some music instead!
