Handstands for the Holidays

Handstands for the Holidays

Yoga gives us lots of tools for dealing with difficult situations. With the holidays, family time and everything else December entails quickly approaching, we’d like to suggest inversions as the antidote to some of that stress.

In yoga, one of the benefits of inversions like handstand (or headstand, forearm stand, or shoulder stand) is that you literally have a different point of view when you’re upside down which can help you to see things differently in other aspects of your life - possibly helping to break old, familiar patterns (that don’t serve you) with family and friends. Balance is key in inversions, so practicing helps you feel grounded, so you’re less easily overwhelmed by all the hustle and bustle. Inversions are scary for most people, so feeling the fear and doing them anyway is great practice for fearlessly heading into the new year.

If you have an inversion practice, now's the time to be consistent. If you’re new, start with lifting only one leg at a time - you’ll still get the benefits, without risking a fall. If inversions aren’t for you (or you’re not in the mood) then lay on your back with your legs up the wall.

Inversions are simultaneously calming, energizing and a great party trick {kidding}. Do them in the morning to start your day, for a midday reset, or to energize before a night out.
